Research:

How to make UFO

Results:

Discussion:

Have there been any sightings of UFOs?

Unidentified flying object (UFO), also called flying saucer, that name is used when referring to an unidentified object in the air.

The first well-known UFO sighting occurred in 1947, when businessman Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane.

Conclusion:

Did it work?

Yes, our making of our UFO worked.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Maybe be more efficient when making the UFO, so that we could finish it earlier.

Trolley dilemma - English

What would you do in the trolley problem?

  • Well either way you're going to get blamed for killing someone, because if you kill the five people and don’t make the shift people are going to wonder why you would’ve rather killed five people rather than one. But if you make the shift to kill just the one person you would probably get more sincerity from the people you would’ve had to explain why you did it.

  • But you could just say you did it to save five lives instead of saving one person even though you had the option to save five lives, but you had to explain to 5 peoples families and a lot of the world for your reasoning to just be willing to kill the five people, even though it was all under your control even if you just tried to ignore it.

Wind racer - Science

Aim:To make a wind racer.

Research:

Youtube

Equipment:

-Trolley

-Bamboo/metal rod

-Cardboard

-Newspaper

-Tape

-String

-Plastic Bag

-Popsicle Sticks

Method:

1.Put the metal rod in the trolley.

2.Cut pieces of material into squares.

3.Draw on the paper for creativity.

4.Gather and cut pieces of tape and string.

5.Stick the materials to the metal rod.

Result:

Discussion: The four forces acting on the wind racer were:

Gravity - The gravity helped to keep it down on the ground instead of it flying in the sky, and then the wind made it than fall over.

Support - Support helped it by the ground keeping the wind racer up instead of it going down straight away.

Pull - The wind racer stopped when it couldn't get pushed any longer.

Push - The leaf blower pushed the wind racer forward or eventually for it to tip over.

Conclusion:

The wind racer did eventually work properly, but at first we had the leaf blower to close to the wind racer which caused the push to be to strong the wind racer couldn't handle it. But then we tried again and it did work because we moved back more and it moved forward.

Why did it slow down?

The wind racer slowed down because the leaf blower was too far away so the wind coming out of it didn’t reach it and the pull caused it to stop as it couldn't get pushed anymore, so that would mean the pull was bigger than the push.

What would you do differently?

Make the wind racer better in terms of Structure, design and wind resistance. I would also use the leaf blower better and put the wind racer further away from the garden so it doesn't full in.

Fire extinguisher test - Science

Aim: To show that carbon dioxide gas is produced when a metal carbonate reacts with acid.

Method:

1. Add a pea sized amount of the metal carbonate into one of the boiling tubes.

2. Place this boiling tube into a test tube rack. Ensure you have the bung and delivery tube ready.

3. Add 5 ml of acid to the boiling tube and quickly insert the bung and delivery tube into the mouth of the boiling tube.

4. Holding the other boiling tube with your tongs, capture the gas produce in the other test tube.

5. Wait about 1 minute so the tube will be full and then get your partner to light the wooden splint.

6. When the test tube is full of gas, then carefully remove the tube from underneath the delivery tube.

7. Then carefully place the burning splint into the test tube.

Result: This experiment lead to the gas we made by adding hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate to produce sodium chloride + oxygen + water, this gas cause it to put the lit splint out.

Discussion: We used hydrochloric acid + sodium carbonate = Sodium chloride + oxygen + sodium chloride to create this gas.

Conclusion: It did work it was to show what gas puts out fires like a fire extinguisher uses the same type of gases we used to put out the flame on the splint.

Water pollution - Social studies

In social studies the last couple weeks we've been watching videos and researching information about world wide problems including the great pacific garbage patch and sea problems/pollution etc, and also how one guy got inspired to try help.

The great pacific garbage patch is a massive patch of garbage it ranges from North America all the way to Japan. The great pacific garbage patch is made of plastic debris which is basically plastic things that get dumped or swept into the ocean.

Their was also a guy called Ali who got inspired to start being more sustainable in his life and try help with all these sea problems. He got inspired because he had realised how much it was effecting our planet and especially our sea life which also effects us.

Testing for hydrogen gas - Science

Aim - To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Equipment - A test tube, a boiling tube, bunsen burner, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, a piece of metal and safety glasses.

Method -

1. Add your sample of metal to your test tube, then proceed to add your 2ml of acid.

2. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.

3. Hold the test tube together for a few minutes, allowing the time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas.

4. When you think the tube is full, Mr Heath came around and lit the splint with a lighter.

5. Carefully but quickly tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Discussion: We knew it was ready to place the lit splint in the test tube, when we had left the acid and metal in for 1 minute or a minute and a half, because it had started to heat/boil and release the gas and steam.

We tried this experiment, twice for the first one we used hydrochloric acid but the result wasn't what we wanted we then tried it with a stronger acid known as sulfuric acid and the result became better.

Conclusion: This experiment did work due to doing all of this it caused it to make a popping noise when the lit splint was placed into the hydrogen gas, you had to place it in their fast and carefully for a better and louder result.

Against/for the tour Beatles - Social Studies

Their were two different perspectives of the Beatles world tour, their were a large group of teenagers especially girls that were mostly for the Beatles world tour, but a majority of the older generation were against this situation.

Against the tour

  -  A majority of the older generation of New Zealanders were against the Beatles world tour, due to the    Beatles lyrics being more sexualised towards the young teenage girls. But not only them sexualising        them but more encouraging them for sin in their life.

- Also a lot of people were against the tour not only cause of their choice of lyrics, but the way their were     outrageous majorities of crowds every where the Beatles went and a lot of the police had to restrain            girls from the Beatles so they had room to move around from place to place with big fences holding the     young teenage girls back.

For the tour

 -  Despite the fact their was so many people against the Beatles world tour. A lot of the younger generation especially a massive majority of teenage girls were so much more for the Beatles world tour, because these young girls were so hypnotised by their looks and choice of song lyrics due to them never hearing anything like this in their lives before. It made these young girls fall for them fast because it was something new and different that they hadn't experienced before.

Hey Jude - The beatles

These are some of the lyrics from hey Jude sung by the Beatles -

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.

Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
Hey Jude, don't be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.
And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.
As you can see by the lyrics it is about a heart break and they were trying to make a positive outlook on a sad situation. By writing a song about his heartbreak and saying to just let it go and not get down and out about it, but to be more positive about the situation.
The older generation didn't like the fact they were influencing relationships, but also sexualising them. But compared to the music back in their days it was more innocent and random. So when the Beatles started realising music it was a great shock to the world and the older generation, but to the younger generation it was soul grabbing and freeing for their body. It was a revolution for history, people were mesmerised by not just their songs but them as people too.

Testing ph - Science

Aim - To test the pH of a range of household chemicals.

Equipment - A variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, Universal indicator solution and safety glasses.

Method:

1 - Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile if a substance tile. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with.

2 - Test the chemicals with litmus papers blue and red.

3 - Test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

Discussion:

When we used toilet cleaner with the blue litmus it turned the litmus red instead of blue, this shows us that toilet cleaner is an acid because red shows that its a acid because it is at the bottom of the ph scale also known as 1 . But when we used universal indicator it went yellow/orange which is just before green on the ph scale so this could be from 3-5.

When you test blue or red litmus paper it can only turn from an acid or base no in between so either blue or red. But if you were to use universal indicator it could go from any scale of the ph scale so it could be neutral or from anywhere between 1 - 14.

Significance of WW1 - The last post

When do you hear this song ?

    - You normally hear this song at ANZAC services, or war memorials/services.

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand ?

    - To remember those who fought for us in world war 1 or for those who fought for their countries all over the world for remembrance.

What is the history behind this song ? Why was it played ?

    - This song was played when the soldiers were ordered to do something or if it was time to eat like dinner. But also it was a symbol/alarm or sign to say it was time to eat, sleep, wake up, fitness time and inspections etc.

What does this song represent ?

    -  It represents the soldiers that died for us and our country who fought for us even though they didn't stand a chance against them, but they still went and fought for our lives and country.

Drawing - Art

Drawing for tone, texture and proportion

These are my drawings -

What is tone ?

    -  Shading is a type of tone, because when you shade your work it gives you another tone towards your work so it adds a different texture to your work. Tone complements your work to then make it stand out more in your drawings.

How'd I use tone in my drawing ?

    - I used tone in my drawing when I tried shading parts of my drawing to give it a different look and texture to make it look 3 dimensional in a way.

What do I want to improve on in my drawing ?

    - I want to improve my shading and the way I use it and how I use it. But also the way I try make the drawing three dimensional by using shading and tone.

Slave trade triangle - Social studies

Here is my blog post about the slave trade triangle and my research I will be showing my work through a song that they used and my, my maps.

I chose the song - Wade in the water, Written by Harriet Tubman.

Meaning - Harriet Tubman wrote this song wade in the water to tell a story of how she helped the slaves escape from the southern states to the northern states. The lyric wade in the water is like the Africans/slaves when they went to the water to wash off the scent on themselves so the dogs couldn't smell them.

Who is Harriet Tubman - Harriet Tubman is the lady that helped at least 12 thousand Africans escape from the Southern slave states to the Northern free states. She used hidden underground rail roads to help them escape from the white men. Harriet Tubman was determined to do this after she found her way to escape and leave the slavery life she was living so she was determined to help others so she set herself a task and completed this task.

This is my  my maps with all my mapping and working I have done on this topic -

Model atom - Science

 Model Atom

Aim - To make a model atom.

Method -

1. Choose an atom to make (one between hydrogen and neon)

2. Work out how many protons, neutrons and electrons it has.

3. Assign protons and neutrons to a particular colour bead.

4. Get a ball of blue tac and stick the protons and neutrons to this to make your nucleus.

5.Cut out the appropriate electron shells and draw on the electrons with vivid.

6. Connect the nucleus and electron shells with a piece of string.

7. Create a label to go above the model so people know what you have created.

Results - Here is a picture of my model atom that I made.

Discussion -

An atomic and mass number is the numbers by the symbol. So the atomic number is the number that represents their place in the periodic table. Which is normally the number placed in the top left corner of the box . The mass number at the bottom of the box underneath the element which is made up by the protons, neutrons and electrons.

The element I chose was carbon it had 8 protons and 6 neutrons/electrons, and the mass number was 12.

Electron arrangement - On the first shell the maximum of electrons allowed are 2 electrons on the next shell the maximum is 8 shells and the third shell the maximum is 8 and so on. My element their was 2 on the first shell and 4 on the next shell because their were only 6 electrons.

2 interesting facts -  Carbon gets its name from the Latin word carbo, which means coal in Latin.

3 2 1 R I Q - English

3 Recalls - Lately in English we have been learning a new way to reflect our work, the reflection task is called 3 2 1 R I Q. I remember that 3 2 1 R I Q means 3 things we re call during the lesson thats what the 3 and R stand for. The two others are 2 insights and 1 question

2 Insights - We learn't how to use this in our blogs to reflect our work we have just learn't. But also helps us to give an easier way to reflect our work to our teacher. My question

1 Question - Why didn't we learn about this earlier ?

3 Recalls - Yesterday in English I remember getting these four words such as suspicion, fallacy, enigma and disappearance. We had to then search up the meanings to the ones we didn't know. Once we did that we then wrote a short story or paragraph with all four words in it.

2 insights - I learnt the definition of enigma and fallacy. We also learn't the different type of nouns like pro nouns, proper nouns, abstract nouns and so on.

1 Question - Why do we have different words for basically the same definition as another word?
