Free writing

One stormy evening I heard a bang on the door.So then I went slowly down the creaky stairs but then just to find out that it was my annoying family members. They walk in creeperly like they had just seen a ghost or something.I was a bit freaked out when they were walking in like they were under a spell.

I tried to ask if they were alright but they were so shocked.I tried to read their mind. But all they were thinking was he got lost in here what did we do to deserve this.

I was speechless because I never saw anyone in here.I blinked in fear and then they were gone and everything started drifting away from my eyesight all of a sudden everything was black.

Music - Hurumanu

Today in music we learnt about guitars, different types, the names of parts of guitars.

Acoustic Guitars -
The pro's of playing acoustic guitars are they don't need an amplifier and they sound good on their own.
Some cons of the acoustic guitar are that they're a little hard than electric guitars to play.

Spanish Guitars -
Spanish guitars are similar to acoustic but some pros and cons of owning them are that they have nylon strings which are softer on your fingers.
A con is that the strings are further apart from each other rather than other guitars.

Bass Guitar -
Bass guitars are guitars that aren't played by them self but played for the beat. They can reach lower notes that acoustic guitars can't play, there's no need to learn chords for them aswell.
They have a long neck which is difficult for a child to play.

All different types of guitars can have a cut out which helps the player play bar chords, at the start of this lesson I had no idea why some guitars had those cuts I thought it was just for show.

Music - Hurumanu

In music a few weeks ago we went to the music suite. We got split up into two groups my group went with Mrs Hastie. When we got their Mrs Bear gave us a sheet and it was like a treasure hunt but for the instruments we had 9 instruments we had to find. We got questions like how many strings are on a ukulele and what songs we could play on the keyboard the song was Havana.

The nine instruments were -

Saxophone

Ukulele

Flute

Electric Guitar

Acoustic Guitar

Electric Guitar

Normal Drums

Keyboard

Piano

We enjoyed going to the music suite because we got to learn and play different instruments that we've never enjoy

  1. Coastal flooding
  2. Coastal erosion.

What can we do?

  1.  Using public transport more.
  2.  Replace your car for an electric car or so hard on fossil fuel.
  3.  Using solar panels or looking to get them on your or at your house.

What is the one, silver bullet solution?

There is not one silver bullet solution there's more then one.

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1.   Renewable electricity.
  2.   Solar electricity.
  3.   Transport that gets away from fossil fuels.
What are 3 others you can think of?
  1.   Using the bus more.
  2.   Recycling.
  3.   Don’t use as much electricity.
My Investigation
Where does our food come from?

  • Choose your favourite food.
  • Macdonalds

On your blog answer the following questions.

  • Where does the food come from (e.g. is it from another province or country, was it purchased or made locally)? It comes from mcdonalds which is from California.

In my burger there is lettuce gherkin onions big mac sauce cheese a patty and buns.

  • How is the food packaged?
It is packaged in a box and a paper bag.

  • What resources do you need to produce this food item ( land, water, oil, food and people.

  • Would this item have been processed?
Yup it has been processed
  • Is there anything unique or significant about the food item
There is a special big mac sauce inside of it.

  • What else do you notice about this food that affects its climate friendliness?
That for the drinks they use plastic.

  • Do you think this food is climate friendly (Circle)?       YES   NO

  • If no, what would be a better alternative?
Um just don’t use plastic straws.

Hurumanu - Music

This week in music we did research on some bands and artist so like when the band formed together or when the singers birth date and when they got famous here is my slide show of the singers and band I researched about this week.

Music - Instrumental Industries

This week we started a new Hurumanu which is music we named it instrumental industries. Our teachers in this Hurumanu are Mrs Hastie and  Mrs Allen Fletcher.

When we first went into our hurumanu we did some work around what type of music we like and what we would liked to accomplish or learn in this hurumanu.

We also looked at three different videos one of them was Poi E they were all different type of music another one of them was christian music which was joyful which you may know it off sister act.

On our first week in this Hurumanu were learning about the ukulele. The ukulele first was made in Hawaii. We also looked at three different types of ukulele they were called  Baratene, Tener and a standard concert ukulele.

Creative writing - They have vanished

They have vanished

I woke up and it was completely silent. I was confused, so I looked around the house and everywhere was completely empty. No one was around, I was confused and worried. I thought, “Where would they have gone?” “How could they forget about me?” “What did I do to deserve this?”

Then I started to think, “Ohh maybe there hiding somewhere around the Island?” I searched and searched around, they were nowhere to be found.

Then I realised that this is the day when we were meant to go find a new whenua for just us. “But why would they forget about me just why and how could they?”

A few days went past and they never returned to come and get me so I stayed on the land with other people and they took me into their family. I was really grateful that those people found me.

Fossil fuels

Aim: To look at how fossil fuels are contributing to climate change and how we can prevent this.

Definition of Fossil Fuels:
It is a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.

Scientific Terms for Students
Coal a dark-brown to black solid substance formed naturally from the compaction and hardening of fossilized plants and used as a fuel primarily for electricity generation
natural gas: a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that occurs naturally beneath the earth’s surface and is used as a fuel primarily for cooking and heating homes
renewable resource: a resource that is never used up (e.g., solar energy)
non-renewable resource: a resource that is not replaceable after its use (e.g., coal, gas)

Examples of Fossil Fuels:
1 Coal
2 oil
3 Natural gases

Mining Fossil Fuels

What Fossil Fuels are mined?
How are they mined?

1.Scrapping
2. digging
3. drilling
4. Exposing buried resources
Where are they mined?

1. Australia
2. Russia
3. Austria
4. Brazil
5. China

Activity;

Material:
  1. Pencil
  2. Sheet/work
Steps:
  1. Draw what your earth looks like before it gets destroyed or mined or how you would want it to look
2. Then draw your island after it has got destroyed.
3. After that show your teacher.

Findings: What did you find out as a result of your mining?
That it is not as easy as people make it sound.

Conclusion:

Because you have to be very careful and take your time doing it.

Climate change - fossil fuels

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years ?
The world ending and not having an earth to live on.Due to climate change flooding storms plastic and carbon dioxide such as the temperature.

How do we see climate change affecting the globe?

Here are four ways I see climate change affecting the globe:

1 Storms
2 Flooding
3 Higher sea levels
4 Pollution

What is needed to change history?
The temperature because that causes the sea levels to be higher due to the ice melting. But we also need to stop carbon dioxide because it makes our air not very good and makes a warm blanket around our world causes it to get warmer and hotter over the years. Which we could shut down fossil fuel factories. We also need to stop using plastic because that also causes water levels rising because it goes down to the bottom of the sea and that water rises up.

Is climate change a man made disaster?
I think climate change is definitely  a man made disaster because we opened up the fossil fuel factories which created the warm blanket around earth with carbon dioxide. But we also invented plastic which caused pollution on our earth.

Dramatic action must be made in the next 10 or so years to change it?

Why is our climate changing?
Pollution such as plastic and rubber. But also because of carbon dioxide because of the warm blanket.

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
The carbon dioxide which is because of fossil fuels such as coal and oil which is petrol gas.Its killing our earth our animals and us as humans.

What is the main problem?
To me it is fossil fuel coal petrol oil gas and carbon dioxide. Because it's changing the temperature causing the water levels to rise. But it is also plastic because it's killing our sea life and animals.

What are examples of these ?
Heat waves, Drafts and Flooding. But that's my opinion.
Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
Coal petrol oil and carbon dioxide.

How much hotter now is our world?
It is currently 1 degree hotter then what it was 100 years ago.

What do we call this global warming?
Climate change

How is this affecting creatures / animals like bats?
Causing them two overheat and they are not used to this heat and weather changing causing them to become extinct or not many of them will be able to live anymore.

What percentage of species are near extinction?
Eight percent of the species are near extinct.

How could this affect the world ecosystems?
It could make the earth collapse and break.

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
The massive record breaking fires over in California destroying so many things that it costs  24 million dollars to replace. Some people even got stuck because it was so unexpected.

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
1. there's more moisture in the air that will cause more rain.
2. Extreme massive storms in the near future if we don't stop.
3. Flooding and higher sea levels because Antarctic and the Arctic have lots 4 trillion of ice because of the temperature.

What is another effect of climate change?
Another effect of climate change is building or building higher.
What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
There will be no Antarctica and no Arctic because it would have all melted away. Our land will disappear due to flooding and water levels rising.

How does this affect people?

This affects us because we will have no land to live on it would have gone disappeared underneath our oceans due to the flooding and water levels rising.

What other things affect oceans change?

Plastic and oil spills it kills our animals and us but also our heat.

What does too much heat do to the coral?
It kills the sea life because the coral can't handle the heat down there.

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?

Because they want the money and there trying to get the oil for cars that use petrol and not Solar and electricity.

Investigation

You can decide on how you would like to do this investigation. Your presentation could be on the blog, slides, or Powerpoint.

Write a definition, upload an image and list where these fossil fuels are mined.

Coal is a hard rock which can be burned as a solid fossil fuel. It is mostly carbon but also contains hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. It is a sedimentary rock by the pressure of rocks laid down later on top.(A sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition of small particles)
Oil - An oil is any nonpolar chemical substance that is a dangerous liquid at very high  temperatures and is hydrophobic.Which is also very bad for our planet/earth.
Natural Gas - Natural gas has methane in it  and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and  helium. But all of them are just as bad as each other.

Solar - it is used for power in your home and other places so just for power and also like photo mechanical
Wind -     you can also use wind for mechanical power  it can also be used for pumping grinding or grain  it can be used in specific reasons like business school's homes and others so it is also like power
Waves -  Waves is about the temperature in the water so the level  so if it is a wave it would be bodily which is a wave and no wave would be piling up the water if you don't know what bodily mean it is when you take it at your own risk and take a body to body so one by one if you don't know what piling is it is heavy stakes or posts

Hydro - hydro is like the oldest energy we have had in our world/planet but it is generating power when flowing water spins a wheel or turbine it is more used by farmers as way back for grain and hay.

Write a 5 sentence reflection about how climate change is going to change our world.

I think that climate change is going to change our earth because it is going to affect our earth and completely kill it. But if that happens we will not have an earth to live on and soon nothing to drink because it will kill us. We need to make a change soon before we can’t stop this as in investing to get an electric car or even walking more places. Just anything that you think will benefit or help our earth become better.
