Climate change - fossil fuels

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years ?
The world ending and not having an earth to live on.Due to climate change flooding storms plastic and carbon dioxide such as the temperature.

How do we see climate change affecting the globe?

Here are four ways I see climate change affecting the globe:

1 Storms
2 Flooding
3 Higher sea levels
4 Pollution

What is needed to change history?
The temperature because that causes the sea levels to be higher due to the ice melting. But we also need to stop carbon dioxide because it makes our air not very good and makes a warm blanket around our world causes it to get warmer and hotter over the years. Which we could shut down fossil fuel factories. We also need to stop using plastic because that also causes water levels rising because it goes down to the bottom of the sea and that water rises up.

Is climate change a man made disaster?
I think climate change is definitely  a man made disaster because we opened up the fossil fuel factories which created the warm blanket around earth with carbon dioxide. But we also invented plastic which caused pollution on our earth.

Dramatic action must be made in the next 10 or so years to change it?

Why is our climate changing?
Pollution such as plastic and rubber. But also because of carbon dioxide because of the warm blanket.

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
The carbon dioxide which is because of fossil fuels such as coal and oil which is petrol gas.Its killing our earth our animals and us as humans.

What is the main problem?
To me it is fossil fuel coal petrol oil gas and carbon dioxide. Because it's changing the temperature causing the water levels to rise. But it is also plastic because it's killing our sea life and animals.

What are examples of these ?
Heat waves, Drafts and Flooding. But that's my opinion.
Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
Coal petrol oil and carbon dioxide.

How much hotter now is our world?
It is currently 1 degree hotter then what it was 100 years ago.

What do we call this global warming?
Climate change

How is this affecting creatures / animals like bats?
Causing them two overheat and they are not used to this heat and weather changing causing them to become extinct or not many of them will be able to live anymore.

What percentage of species are near extinction?
Eight percent of the species are near extinct.

How could this affect the world ecosystems?
It could make the earth collapse and break.

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
The massive record breaking fires over in California destroying so many things that it costs  24 million dollars to replace. Some people even got stuck because it was so unexpected.

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
1. there's more moisture in the air that will cause more rain.
2. Extreme massive storms in the near future if we don't stop.
3. Flooding and higher sea levels because Antarctic and the Arctic have lots 4 trillion of ice because of the temperature.

What is another effect of climate change?
Another effect of climate change is building or building higher.
What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
There will be no Antarctica and no Arctic because it would have all melted away. Our land will disappear due to flooding and water levels rising.

How does this affect people?

This affects us because we will have no land to live on it would have gone disappeared underneath our oceans due to the flooding and water levels rising.

What other things affect oceans change?

Plastic and oil spills it kills our animals and us but also our heat.

What does too much heat do to the coral?
It kills the sea life because the coral can't handle the heat down there.

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?

Because they want the money and there trying to get the oil for cars that use petrol and not Solar and electricity.

Investigation

You can decide on how you would like to do this investigation. Your presentation could be on the blog, slides, or Powerpoint.

Write a definition, upload an image and list where these fossil fuels are mined.

Coal is a hard rock which can be burned as a solid fossil fuel. It is mostly carbon but also contains hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. It is a sedimentary rock by the pressure of rocks laid down later on top.(A sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition of small particles)
Oil - An oil is any nonpolar chemical substance that is a dangerous liquid at very high  temperatures and is hydrophobic.Which is also very bad for our planet/earth.
Natural Gas - Natural gas has methane in it  and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and  helium. But all of them are just as bad as each other.

Solar - it is used for power in your home and other places so just for power and also like photo mechanical
Wind -     you can also use wind for mechanical power  it can also be used for pumping grinding or grain  it can be used in specific reasons like business school's homes and others so it is also like power
Waves -  Waves is about the temperature in the water so the level  so if it is a wave it would be bodily which is a wave and no wave would be piling up the water if you don't know what bodily mean it is when you take it at your own risk and take a body to body so one by one if you don't know what piling is it is heavy stakes or posts

Hydro - hydro is like the oldest energy we have had in our world/planet but it is generating power when flowing water spins a wheel or turbine it is more used by farmers as way back for grain and hay.

Write a 5 sentence reflection about how climate change is going to change our world.

I think that climate change is going to change our earth because it is going to affect our earth and completely kill it. But if that happens we will not have an earth to live on and soon nothing to drink because it will kill us. We need to make a change soon before we can’t stop this as in investing to get an electric car or even walking more places. Just anything that you think will benefit or help our earth become better.

Solar energy

Aim - is to see how Solar Energy works.

Materials:

1. Cups (x4)
2. Water
3. 1 large cup
4. 2 sheets white paper
5. 1 large black piece
6. Thermometer
7. Tinfoil
8. Lamp

Steps
1. Fill the cups with water

2. Then you place each cup on separate pieces of sheets and put the large cup on on of the cups that are on a white piece of paper.

3.  Then plug your lamp in and make sure that it is covering all cups. Then you leave it for the amount of time it requires.

4. When that's done then grab the thermometer and see how hot it is.

5. Then you put it done on your blog.

Which surface conducts / attracts the most heat?
The tinfoil and black paper had the most heat in 40 minutes which was both 20 degrees
Time +
temperature
Cup 1
- 0 minutes 12 degrees 40 minutes 15 degrees
White paper
Cup 2
White paper+ plastic.
- 0 minutes 12 degrees 40 minutes 14 degrees

Cup 3
Black paper
- 0 minutes 12 degrees 40 minutes 20 degrees

Cup 4
Tinfoil
- 0 minutes 12 degrees 40 minutes 20 degrees

Findings:
That the tinfoil and black paper were the hottest ones at 20 degrees in 40 minutes which kind of warm. But the least warmest was actually the plastic and white paper one which only reached 12 degrees in 40 minutes which only went up 2 degrees since we started it.
Conclusion:

I think that they are the hottest because black attracts the sun to it and we used black paper. But I think that tinfoil was high because it is like a mirror which reflects the sun which would’ve reflected it into the water in the  cup.

Wind speed - Making an anemometer.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1. x4 cups
  2. x4 straws
  3. tape
  4. pin
  5. pencil

STEPS

  1.  Get your materials
  2.  Put one whole in each side of all your cups.
  3. After that put the straws threw the holes that you made.
  4. And then put the pins threw the straws and also make a cross then put the pin in threw the straws into the pencil.
  5. And finally your done and now you can record you times and see how much km per hour you get.
Group size: 3

You will need:

Anemometer (above)

Roles:
  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind generator

FINDINGS

  • Record how many times it spins using the table below.
You will need to create the wind yourself by blowing. Get 4 different wind speeds by blowing.

You will need to time them and count the number of spins.

Time IntervalNumber of Spins
1.10 secondsAll 10
2.10S 29
3.10M 19
4.10C 41
  • Can you make a statement connecting the number of spins of your anemometer and the speed of the wind?
  • The one done under the heat pump got 29 spins which is 6-7 km per hour which isn't very fast but can blow dust around. But then when it was really windy and stormy it had 41 spins which is 12 km per hour which is faster then under the heat pump.

CONCLUSION:

That when it is windy it is stronger wind then usual because the wind is much stronger then standing under the heat pump. But the weakest was when we blew it and it only did 10 spins in ten seconds because my breath was running out when I blew it with my mouth and I was also getting a bit light headed.

Science - Water cycle

AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.
Definition:

The water cycle describes how water evaporates from the surface of the earth, rises
into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again
to the surface as precipitation. The rain that falls on the ground or land collects in rivers and lakes and soil and most of I goes back in the oceans, where it will once more evaporated. The cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere is a significant aspect of the weather patterns on Earth.

Scientific words:

Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the water falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.
An illustration of the water cycle showing how water travels from rivers and streams to clouds to snow and back again

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT
Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in land

3 One cup of water

4 2 drops of food colouring

Steps:
  1. Get in a group of three and then get a vivid marker and ziplock plastic bag.
  2. Then you draw clouds, the sea, sun, rain and trees.
  3. After that you then pour your one cup of water into the ziplock bag.
  4. When the water is poured in then you add two drops of food colouring in the water.
  5. Then finally you put them in a sunny place for a few days.
Here is Two Images of what we drew.

Here is the materials and steps to bag 2 -

 Material:

1 Plastic bag

2 Vivid marker

3 One cup of soda water

4 2 drops of food coloring

 Steps:

  1. Get in a group of three and then get a vivid marker and zip lock plastic bag.
  2. Then you draw clouds, the sea, sun, rain and trees.
  3. After that you then pour your one cup of soda water into the zip lock bag.

  1. When the water is poured in then you add two drops of food coloring in the water.
  2. Then finally you put them in a sunny place for a few days and watch what happens.

We used soda water because it has carbon dioxide in it and we wanted to know what would happen if there was any difference in it or too it.

Creative writing Draft

Words -
The coral reef
Five thousand weta
Haunted forest
Embarrass
Revenge
Thief

One misty night I woke up and heard a smash it was like someone broke or knocked over a vase. So I got up in a hurry to see what was wrong. I got down the hallway and heard the door bang. So I ran out the door then I yelled there was a thief in my house.

The thief was wearing  black pants black hoodie and a black beanie. But no one heard me yelling so then I started chasing him. He was heading for the haunted forest.

I was still running after but then I fell into these insects I got up to see what they were.I looked on the ground and their was about five thousand weta crawling everywhere and somewhere even on me.I couldn't see him anymore it was like he had disappeared into the mist.

But I yelled out to the thief I will get revenge on you someday I will remember you and what you look like.

In the distance I saw an ocean I thought to myself I could go in their and wash these weta off me. So I walked over their and jumped in and tried to swim down to  the coral reef. But that didn't end up happening.

So I ran back home out of the scary haunted forest I said I am never coming back here again in my life. I got home had a quick shower and went to sleep.

The next morning I woke up look in the mirror and saw some weta still crawling on me so I said to myself that it will be too embarrassing to go to school today. But I’m never gonna step one foot in that haunted forest again.
